The story, spanning 1945 to 1955, chronicles the family under the patriarch Vito Corleone (Brando), focusing on the transformation of the son Michael Corleone (Pacino), raised to have a life outside of crime, from reluctant family outsider to ruthless mafia boss.
The story begins as "Don" Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia "family", oversees his daughter's wedding with his wife Carmela. His beloved son Michael has just come home from the war, but does not intend to become part of his father's business. Through Michael's life the nature of the family business becomes clear.
The Godfather's central story chronicles an ongoing power struggle between the Corleone family and their New York rivals. The other four families - the Tattaglias, the Barzinis, the Cuneos and the Straccis - are seeking to move into the narcotics trade with the help of Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo, but the old-fashioned Don Corleone refuses to play ball.
Connie and Carlo have asked Michael to be the godfather to their son. As the baptism is performed, the heads of the other New York Mafia families are killed by Corleone hit men on Michael’s orders. When Michael exits the church, he gets word that the killings have been successful. He has become the undisputed Mafia boss of the city.
In The Godfather, after meeting two of his father’s enemies in a restaurant, Michael takes them out by shooting them with a gun he had planted in the bathroom. In 1931, Lucky Luciano's boss Joe Masseria met him at an Italian restaurant.
